  • Reliance And Airtel Announces Cuts In Roaming Charges

    Indian mobile service providers Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications have both announced their reduced roaming tariffs.

    These two companies have also announced the scrapped rental rates for roaming services. These announcements are to meet the recently released guidelines issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India last month.

    Bharti Airtel said that they have now slashed roaming charges by 56%. They have also now waived off the roaming rental of Rs 49 per month.

    In addition, their local calls while roaming will be charged at Rs 1.40 per minute. STD calls would be charged at a fixed 2.40 per minute. Incoming calls on roaming would cost Rs 1.75 per minute.

    Sanjay Kapoor, joint president (mobile services), Bharti Airtel added on these new announcements: “We now usher in an era of simplified roaming tariffs wherein all Airtel mobile users will benefit from our seamless network and have the opportunity to make calls while traveling anywhere in India.”

  • Essar To Continue Being A Partner With Hutch

    India’s Essar Group has confirmed that they are going to remain a partner in Hutchison Essar. This comes after Vodafone was confirmed as the company that is going to buy Hutchison’s stake in the company.

    Essar Group vice chairman Ravi Ruia said in a statement: “We are not going to exit the business. We will run it together.” Essar has a 33% stake in the company which is the fourth largest mobile service provider in India.

    This statement was released after a marathon meeting between the Vodafone team and the Ruias.

    Vodafone chief Arun Sarin added in a statement: “I know Ruias from long ago. I respect their partnership. They have created value in the business. We are now trying to iron out issues and will take the business forward together.”

    Sarin added that he wanted the steel-to-shipping Essar Group to remain a partner in Hutchison Essar.

    Vodafone’ acquisition of Hutchison’s stake in the company is expected to be complete by April this year.

  • MTNL Slashes Roaming Charges

    Government owned telecom company MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) has now announced that they are slashing the national roaming rates with effect from 15th Feb’2007.

    This announcement is to comply with the recent ruling of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

    The company said in a release that all local calls on roaming will be charged at Rs. 1.40 per minute from the existing Rs. 1.50 per minute. They would also be levying a 14% surcharge.

    MTNL added that STD calls on roaming would cost Rs.2.40 per minute. Earlier they were charging a surcharge of 14%.

    Incoming calls on roaming would cost the customer Rs. 1.75 per minute. This is down from Rs. 2.50 per minute. The company already does not charge any roaming charges from their customers.

  • Sify Launches WiMAX Solution With Mobility Features

    Sify is working in partnership with Proxim Wireless and the two companies have now launched WiMAX solution with mobility features.

    The company claims that this service is the first of its kind. The companies have deployed Proxim Wireless’s Tsunami MP.11 WiMAX product line as the core communications platform. The last mile access would be provided using the 5.8 GHz frequency band.

    Sify is claiming that they have deployed over 700 Tsunami MP.11 base stations in addition to 3,500 subscriber units to provide Internet access, voice, and video broadband services. They aim to provide this facility to enterprise, residential, and cyber cafe subscribers in over 200 cities.

    Lionel Chmilewsky, Senior Vice President- International, Proxim Wireless spoke on this initiative: “Sify’s deployment is certainly a strong endorsement of our WiMAX technology and product line. As India’s premier provider of broadband access services, Sify is setting the standard for delivering ‘triple play’ of voice, data, and video to subscribers wherever they are located throughout the country. We are pleased and honored to be their partner in this effort.”

    Bhaskar S, Chief Technology Officer, Sify added: “After testing and evaluating products from a number of manufacturers over a period of eight months, we chose Proxim’s product line because the company met all our criteria, and its point-to-multipoint products offer the best packet processing capacity for last mile access.”

  • Tata Sky To Invest 20 Million More In Indian Market

    Tata Sky planning to invest Rs 20 billion more in Indian operations

    DTH Company Tata Sky has stated that they plan to invest Rs 20 billion to expand their presence in the country. The company added that they expect to take 5-7 years to break even.

    Tata Sky CEO and MD Vikram Kaushik added in a statement: “We have already invested close to Rs 10 billion. We will pump in a further Rs 20 billion.”

    The company charges Rs 3999 for hardware and installation cost. The subscription cost is around Rs 300 per month.

    Tata Sky further claims that they already have a subscriber base of half a million. They aim to benefit from the upcoming Cricket World Cup by adding more subscribers.

    The company has also planned a free subscription promotional scheme for the next three months.

    Kaushik added: “We are on course to achieve our target of one million subscribers in our first year of operations. We have activated half a million boxes. The World Cup should give us a spurt as we have interesting value-added features.”

    Tata Sky also has roped in Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan for its new marketing campaign.

  • Vodafone May Bring It’s International Service To India

    Vodafone Passport, Vodafone Simply and Vodafone Live might be launched in India

    British mobile giant Vodafone is in the process of acquiring Hutchison’s stake in Indian mobile company Hutch. They expect to complete this deal by April.

    The company is now expected to bring some of their international services in the Indian market to lure customers away from competitors.

    Market analysts suggest that the company might bring some of its most popular offerings such as Vodafone Passport, Vodafone Simply and Vodafone Live to India.

    They could also launch other services like video calling, video messaging and mobile television in the Indian market.

    Vodafone has not revealed much about their plans for India. A company spokesperson said: “We will make clear our specific plans in terms of products and services when we complete the transaction and following discussions with the management team.”
